About Queensbridge Houses
Queensbridge Houses is the largest public housing development in North America — 3,142 apartments across 26 buildings (each six stories) on 50 acres in Long Island City, Queens. The development opened in 1939 under the Public Works Administration. It''s bounded roughly by 40th Avenue, the East River, Bridge Plaza, and 21st Street, in the shadow of the Queensboro Bridge.
Apartment sizes range from one-bedroom to four-bedroom units. Heat, hot water, gas, and electric are included in the rent.
How to apply
NYCHA public housing applications go through a single citywide waitlist:
- Visit the NYCHA Self-Service Portal and create an account
- Complete the public housing application — you can rank up to five development preferences (Queensbridge can be listed)
- The waitlist is currently open for select household types; check current status at nycha.info
- Once you reach the top of the waitlist for a matching unit, NYCHA contacts you for an interview and apartment offer
Rent is calculated as 30% of your adjusted household income — there is no flat asking rent. Households earning at or below 80% of NYC Area Median Income (AMI) qualify; preference points are given to working families, veterans, and those in emergency situations.
Neighborhood
Long Island City has the F train at 21st Street-Queensbridge (the station directly serves the development), plus the N, R, W, M, and 7 trains at nearby stations. One stop to Manhattan. The neighborhood has been transformed by waterfront development in recent decades — Queensbridge Park, Gantry Plaza State Park, and the LIC Flea — while maintaining one of the most established public-housing tenant communities in the city. CUNY''s LaGuardia Community College and the Queensbridge Houses Community Center serve residents directly.
