About Red Hook East Houses
Red Hook East is part of the larger Red Hook Houses NYCHA campus — together, Red Hook East and Red Hook West contain approximately 2,545 apartments and are among the largest NYCHA campuses in Brooklyn. The development opened in 1939, designed in a garden-apartment style with six-story walk-ups and elevator buildings across multiple blocks south of Lorraine Street.
Apartment sizes range from one-bedroom to four-bedroom units. Heat, hot water, gas, and electric are included in the rent.
How to apply
NYCHA public housing applications go through a single citywide waitlist:
- Visit the NYCHA Self-Service Portal and create an account
- Complete the public housing application — you can rank up to five development preferences (Red Hook East can be listed)
- The waitlist is currently open for select household types; check current status at nycha.info
- Once you reach the top of the waitlist for a matching unit, NYCHA contacts you for an interview and apartment offer
Rent is calculated as 30% of your adjusted household income — there is no flat asking rent. Households earning at or below 80% of NYC Area Median Income (AMI) qualify; preference points are given to working families, veterans, and those in emergency situations.
Neighborhood
Red Hook is one of Brooklyn''s most physically isolated neighborhoods — the B61 bus is the main transit connection to the Smith-9th Street F and G trains. NYC Ferry serves Red Hook to Manhattan and other Brooklyn waterfronts. The neighborhood has Red Hook Recreation Center, the Red Hook Library, the Brooklyn Justice Center, and the IKEA / Fairway / Tesla riverfront area. The Red Hook Initiative is a long-running community organization serving NYCHA residents.
The development took significant damage during Hurricane Sandy in 2012; major resiliency upgrades have been ongoing since 2017.
