About Wagner Houses
Wagner Houses (named for Senator Robert F. Wagner) is one of the largest NYCHA developments in Manhattan — 2,154 apartments across 22 buildings between East 120th Street and East 124th Street, from First Avenue toward the FDR Drive. The development opened in 1958.
Apartment sizes range from one-bedroom to four-bedroom units. Heat, hot water, gas, and electric are included in the rent.
How to apply
NYCHA public housing applications go through a single citywide waitlist:
- Visit the NYCHA Self-Service Portal and create an account
- Complete the public housing application — you can rank up to five development preferences (Wagner Houses can be listed)
- The waitlist is currently open for select household types; check current status at nycha.info
- Once you reach the top of the waitlist for a matching unit, NYCHA contacts you for an interview and apartment offer
Rent is calculated as 30% of your adjusted household income — there is no flat asking rent. Households earning at or below 80% of NYC Area Median Income (AMI) qualify; preference points are given to working families, veterans, and those in emergency situations.
