About This Program in New Jersey
In New Jersey, the Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) program and public housing in Newark are administered by the Newark Housing Authority (NHA). Rent is income-based — generally about 30% of adjusted household income — whether in an NHA development or with a voucher used in private housing.
How to Apply in New Jersey
Apply through NHA at newarkha.org when waitlists are open. New Jersey protects renters from source-of-income discrimination statewide (N.J.S.A. 10:5-1 et seq.), so most landlords cannot refuse a Housing Choice Voucher. Call NHA at (973) 273-6000 for current waitlist status.
