Voucher-Friendly Housing in Providence

PHA serves the city of Providence, operating public housing communities — such as Hartford Park, Chad Brown, Codding Court, Manton Heights, and Dexter Manor — along with the Housing Choice Voucher program. Rent in PHA public housing is income-based, set at roughly 30% of adjusted household income.

Rhode Island protects renters from source-of-income discrimination statewide. Under the Rhode Island Fair Housing Practices Act, amended effective April 15, 2021, landlords generally may not refuse to rent to you simply because you would pay with a Housing Choice Voucher or other lawful assistance such as Social Security, disability, or child support. One exception: owner-occupied two- and three-unit dwellings are exempt. If a landlord rejects your voucher, you may have a right to file a complaint with the Rhode Island Commission for Human Rights, which can impose fines for violations.
