97 subsidized & affordable buildings

These buildings have federal rent subsidies attached to the unit — you apply to the building directly and pay about 30% of your income. Most keep their own waiting list, separate from the housing authority's voucher list.

About Section 8 in Houston

HHA serves the city of Houston, operating traditional public housing developments — such as Cuney Homes, Kelly Village, and Irvinton Village — along with the Housing Choice Voucher program. Rent in HHA public housing is income-based, set at roughly 30% of adjusted household income.

Waitlist Overview

HHA maintains waitlists for public housing and the Housing Choice Voucher program. Waitlists open and close periodically depending on availability and funding. Applicants can list development preferences and are contacted as units become available. Check current waitlist status directly with HHA before applying.

Source of Income Protections

Texas does not protect renters from source-of-income discrimination. A 2015 state law also prevents most cities from requiring landlords to accept Housing Choice Vouchers (an exception applies to military and veteran income). In practice, this means you may need to search specifically for landlords and properties that choose to accept vouchers.

How to Apply in Houston

Apply through the Houston Housing Authority (HHA) at housingforhouston.com when waitlists are open. Rent is based on income (about 30% of adjusted household income); eligibility is generally limited to households at or below local income limits. Call HHA at (713) 260-0500 for current waitlist information.
