Voucher-Friendly Housing in New Orleans

HANO serves the city of New Orleans, operating mixed-income communities — such as Harmony Oaks, Columbia Parc, Bienville Basin, and Faubourg Lafitte — along with the Housing Choice Voucher program. Most were redeveloped from the city's historic public housing developments. Rent in the public housing units is income-based, set at roughly 30% of adjusted household income.

HANO maintains waitlists for public housing and the Housing Choice Voucher program, applied for online through hano.org. Waitlists open and close periodically depending on availability and funding. Louisiana does not protect renters from source-of-income discrimination. There is no state law, and no New Orleans ordinance, requiring private landlords to accept a Housing Choice Voucher — participation is voluntary, and a landlord may legally decline a voucher. This is why finding a landlord who already accepts vouchers matters here. Fair Housing protections still apply: a landlord may not refuse you based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status, or disability.
